Delhi - Jim Corbett National Park
Jim Corbett National Park, the oldest national park in India, was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park to protect the endangered Bengal tiger. It is located in Nainital district of Uttarakhand and was named after Jim Corbett who played a key role in its establishment.
A haunt for tourists and wildlife lovers, a 3 day trip from Delhi to Corbett is a must visit. Tourism activity is only allowed in selected areas of Corbett Tiger Reserve so that people get an opportunity to see its splendid landscape and the diverse wildlife.
Corbett National Park comprises of hills, river belts, marshy depressions, grass lands and a large lake.
Best time to visit - November to June, mainly before and after heavy monsoon.
Jhirna - A densely wooded and grassland habitat,it makes for excellent bird viewing.
Bijrani - This forest range has a wide network of jungle roads,making Bijrani an excellent tiger sighting territory.
Dhikala - This is the largest and most varied zones in Corbett, offering the best opportunities for overnight stays.
Sightseeing in Corbett
Corbett Jungle Museum - This is the place where Jim Corbett stayed during winters and the museum houses his personal items like gun, fishing net, cap, bag and some of his photographs with tigers.
Sitabani Forest Reserve - This site is a bird watchers paradise and has an Ashram tucked away in the jungle. This is an ideal place for wildlife photography.
Garija Temple - There is a huge rock projecting out of the Kosi river bed. On the pinnacle is a beautiful temple of Durga Devi names as Garjia Devi. One has to climb a narrow stairs to reach the temple. An enchanting view of the river Kosi can be seen from the top of the rock. It is a good place for bathing, basking worship and lunch enroute to Corbett Park.
